George North and his family came to SA in 1860 on the Barque Emperatrice Eugene and settled in Northdene and owned considerable land on the North and South bank of the Umhlatuzana River. Various crops were tried including tea and coffee but it was sugar cane that worked best. In 1885 the Norths built a home on the south bank on land now known as Shallcross.. They lived there until 1900. This farm land is now part of the Shallcross Township. This album has images of the deserted house probably dating back to the early 1900’s. The North family moved on to the north bank into a home known as Bonavista.
