OLD SOUTH COAST BRIDGES USING SCREW PILES.

OLD SOUTH COAST BRIDGES USING SCREW PILES.

There are many bridges on the south coast of KZN. What is of interest is that one method of  providing the bridge supports was to use what is known as a screw pile. The piles are massive metal screws that are literally screwed into the sand and underlying riverbed. The bridge deck is then laid over the piles. Most have now disappeared as rust has taken its toll and the bridges replaced. The image here is on a river near Mzumbe.
