Rietfontein Farm – Ladysmith – 24 October 1899

A visit to this site on the farm Rietfontein, near Nicholson’s Nek, brings one into contact with John Hawkesbury, the owner of the farm and an ex Military man (Kings Own Border Regiment & U.S.M.C.R).John kindly gave me some background and then allowed me to photograph and visit the Boer Cemetery, and graves and monuments associated with the battle that took place on 24 October 1899.The farm is within easy distance of Ladysmith and will require his consent to visit his home which was a Boer hospital during the conflict. Monuments have been moved to the farmhouse for safekeeping and the grounds are immaculately maintained. John has some interesting memorabilia and documents relating to the conflict on the farm.
A phone number is up on the board outside the farm house if one wishes to contact the owner & have access.
